What a wonderful, invigorating, and exciting time we all had at the two-day "Watercolor on Stained Collage Workshop" with internationally recognized teacher, Gerald Brommer!
Mr. Brommer began the session on Saturday describing the process we would follow to create and then paint on a collage.
The following are the steps we followed:
- Gerald provided a packet of various textured sheets of rice paper to everyone.
- We painted on the rice paper with a variety of colors, and set them aside to dry.
- We drew scenery on watercolor paper.
- We glued pieces of the stained and dried paper onto our drawings.
- The next day we painted over the dried collage, adding details while focusing on the center of attention, the focal point, of the composition.

It was intimidating and challenging at first, but after doing it a while, I think we got the idea and knew the procedure. Most participants were so inspired by the process that they started new paintings even as the first ones were drying.
Finally the time was close to the end and we were ready for Gerald's critique session, during which he described the strengths of each painting, and offered ideas for improvements. WOW!! Such a display of creativity. The "Show" was stunning!! Mr. Brommer pointed out how he perceives, analyzes and judges a painting, focusing first on perspective and composition, and then assessing how well each artist directed attention to a well-defined and developed focal point. |

Mr. Brommer repeated a few times a quotation from his former watercolor instructor, Noel Quinn, from Otis Art Institute: "Dark against light, and Light against dark" make an impact and a successful painting.
This workshop, attended by 15 students, was well-received, much-appreciated, and a lot of fun. We are so lucky to have had the privilege of a master instructor, author, watercolor artist, and a gentleman enlighten us with his knowledge and his craft.
Thank You Gerald, for an exhilarating workshop!
