Beyond the Box - Painting Utility Boxes in Glendale
by Angela Alvarenga
Beyond the Box is a program through the city of Glendale that commissions local artist to paint selected Utility boxes. These mural pieces help beautify the local community and bring art to people who may not always have access to it.
I was selected to be a part of the Beyond the Box project for April 2017. My sister and I painted the box together with my preapproved artwork of “The Music Box.” The theme of the mural was Jazz. The mural has all jazz instruments that dance around the box over a piano that is wrapped around the box. The instruments have gold music notes float out of them and around the box.
The box had to be painted with specific acrylic paints and then sprayed with a protective coating. It is located at the corner of Louise and Broadway in the City of Glendale tight outside of a restaurant called Shabu Shabu.
This was such an incredible opportunity to create public art that a vast demographic can enjoy and I really hope I can participate in it again in the near future.
