NEW WORK - Skies in watercolor
Yucca on Red Rock - La Canada Hiking Trails
Hiking in the foothills has inspired many of my sketch book doodles. Quarantine became my crutch to peruse through my book in search of inspiration. In Yucca on Red Rock, I took one of my plein air sketches and decided to develop it in different media. I love working with watercolors and Japanese Washi paper and am also drawn to experimenting with other water media (especially since gouache is now widely used by many watercolorists). I started with a 9/12 watercolor sketch (N1) and then enlarged it to a 22/30 watercolor (N2). Yes, I did use some gouache in highlighting the plants but saved the white of the paper for much of this large piece. Experimenting with a changed time of day, I made a mixed media 22/30 of the same. I used watercolors, inks, pens and pastels (N3). Julie Crouch's class, a few weeks ago, inspired me to try my hand at abstraction. I wanted my abstraction to draw from a piece of work I had created and hence I turned to the yucca again (N4). I mimicked the shapes and colors of the realistic piece and |

saved the whites on the paper to construct the design. The last piece (N5) is a "failed painting" that was "saved" using the same theme by lifting, adding white and line work with a white gel pen (courtesy of Crouch's class). I am working with the same image in oil color. Will send when complete.
