June 3 Meeting - Scholarship Winner Sydney McClelland
Highlighting our final meeting before summer was a presentation by Sydney McClelland, a senior at La Canada High School, who is on her way to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles this autumn. By the end of her junior year Sydney decided she very much wanted to pursue fashion design. But, as a student wanting to pursue study in the arts, she faced a challenge; colleges require portfolios of work in the specific fields that students want to pursue. And Sydney had not yet begun developing a fashion design portfolio. So her senior year was packed with the work of creating many “collections” of clothing to submit during her application process.
For those of us who are not well versed in fashion design, the work goes well beyond designing clothing that looks good. Clothing must also be designed in a way that it can be built and will fit well, and so requires both artistic and engineering skills. As a result, Sydney not only had to draw her designs, she had to make clothing collections by hand, too! |
